Choosing cabinet hardware isn’t always “easy-peasy.” Beyond type, size, and placement, the finish you pick can make or break the look. This is part four of our series on cabinet hardware finishes, and we’re focusing on the dark tones—black, black nickel, and graphite.
Missed the earlier parts?
Black is a foundational neutral designers use for balance, contrast, and depth. In hardware, you’ll most often see two nearly identical sheens: matte black (low-luster, non-reflective) and flat black (equally dark with the faintest sheen).
While people often use the terms interchangeably, flat black has a whisper of sheen; matte black reads deeper and more velvety. The difference is subtle—you’d likely need to compare side-by-side to spot it.
Black nickel is not just “black”—it’s glossy and reflective with subtle nickel undertones, much like polished chrome is to the silver family.
Expect a deep, polished surface with slate-like nuances. It’s dramatic without feeling heavy.
Graphite is a complex, muted gunmetal—somewhere between black and gray—with warm brown/green undertones that make it a true chameleon.
Not quite black, not quite gray; its layered undertones create a welcoming, versatile alternative to stark black.
There you have it—our three most popular dark-tone finishes. Whether you choose black, black nickel, or graphite, each delivers classic contrast and fresh polish across kitchens, baths, and furniture.
We hope this four-part guide helped you zero in on the right color for your project. We’re a small family business and love the details—email us anytime at sales@doorcorner.com for product advice, sizing, or placement tips.
